Since the sun is (finally) shining and it's a new month today, I'd like to take the opportunity to mail merge wish everyone I care about a Happy September. To some, it might be finding that new job they're chasing; To others, it might be going on holiday after months of slaving away in front of a hot computer (but make sure you come back!); To a couple of good blokes I know, it's that England Win The Ashes; ( , Crusoe!) To anyone with an anniversary to mark this month, it's that you celebrate ebulliently, loudly, at length, and take lots of photographs. Which brings me to my point: how do you get photographs out of the mobile phone and into the computer, eh? Someone knows how to do it. So what do you hope September brings for you? A new bike would be good

A Happy September to you, too, Nurse D. Thank you for your thoughts re: the Ashes: it’s still all rather tense, isn’t it? Such sweet torture or something like that.
And I second your good wishes to all those who have things they require good wishes for. Particularly those looking for that new job (Fingers, etc. are crossed: it makes it bl**dy difficult to type, of course, but it’s a minor issue)

A happy September to you too Nurse D. Re. the getting of pictures off phones, I went to my friendly phone shop and asked them and they sold me a special lead to plug into the phone and computer which came with a cd - it all worked - once. Then I lost the piddling bit of wire .

Well thanks Crusoe and Lil for your September reciprocations. Crusoe, what the heck are the England team doing right now? It's a long gap between nail-biting. Lil, I have that piddling bit of wire on the box of gubbins which came with the phone, and a CD. Never looked at them properly (yet) but I will investigate further - problemo is I'm on a Mac (as you may know) but let's be positive. I thought I'd need some special software but ginfers crossed, just like Crusoe. ps. there are at least three of my pals out there looking for new jobs right now; pps. and at least two others on holiday or about to go-on; ppps. and three different ones with anniversaries in September; pppps. and thousands looking squinty-eyed at the work schedule during the Oval Test Match. crossed-fingers gif <---someone will find one

Hee hee... very amusing thread, you whole 'lot'! Made me laugh, especially Nursie's little pyramid of September statistics here... ps. there are at least three of my pals out there looking for new jobs right now; pps. and at least two others on holiday or about to go-on; ppps. and three different ones with anniversaries in September; pppps. and thousands looking squinty-eyed at the work schedule during the Oval Test Match. I don't think I've gotten too squinty-eyed, just yet. (Though it can happen when you cross your eyes too much, so I'm told.)

Ah, yes, September. Sometimes lovely weather, but the end of amateur cricket and morrissing. What's a person to do, but loll about in any available sunshine reading a book?
Good luck to job-seekers and lovers everywhere, anyone having to deal with enormous forms, people who have to carry a miniature screwdriver everywhere because their spectacles keep coming undone, and, indeed everyone else.
Let us all make the most of September, because there won't be another one for 12 months.
At least I won't have to worry about my computer overheating. Hurrah!

'When an early autumn walks the land and chills the breeze And touches with her hand the summer trees, Perhaps you’ll understand what memories I own. There’s a dance pavilion in the rain all shuttered down, A winding country lane all russet brown, A frosty window pane shows me a town grown lonely. That spring of ours that started so april-hearted, Seemed made for just a boy and girl. I never dreamed, did you, any fall would come in view So early, early. Darling if you care, please, let me know, I’ll meet you anywhere, I miss you so. Let’s never have to share another early autumn.'
Early Autumn Johnny Mercer

Crusoe, what the heck are the England team doing right now? It's a long gap between nail-biting. I think that they’re having a well-earned rest, Nurse Duckett. Although a few of them (Ian Bell, Ashley Giles, Kevin Pietersen) may be playing in the C&G final, between Warwickshire and Hampshire tomorrow.

Sounds like a good idea to me, Lux. Although I ought to be painting the weatherboards before winter. I don’t know why I didn’t just build a straw hut like everyone else on the island.

What a lovely poem, Captain. So tender and poignant. It makes me want to and I'm touched. Had to tell you that. Sentimental Nursie

Oh ok, as long as they don't scoff too much pasta and get so fat they have to waddle down to the wicket like that b*st*rd S.Warne. Bowling at a single stump should keep their eyes in, perhaps? (That bloke in the BodyLine tour did this, a northerner, retired to Australia, who was he?) Crusoe will know even though he's only a baby

I'm not sure what this has to with September but the narrator sounds happy and it's called
September Poem
I cannot fashion verses for a love I do not know. Quiet angel with the catlike eyes I was in love with you before I knew your name.
Impulsive, and seldom wrong about such things, I forced my horse to pause beside you; I lifted you up behind me And now am streaking headlong somewhere. You ride well, you look right for the part.
The thrust of your body there and there As my horse reaches for new ground Is electric and soft against me. You laugh low and quiet sometimes For reasons I cannot imagine. You hold tight to my waist Even though you ride like a tiger on a ram.
For days I have ridden like a wild thing-- Like the boy raised by wolves-- Naked and proud and brilliant. My legs are locked in fat and muscle. Hot and wet against my monster horse, I flash my eyes at heaven and hell And always back to you.
I am in love with the wind And the ride And the touch of you there and there. The tall grasses brush and whip us, Limbs reach out to pull us down. We dodge and jump and circle. We are freedom. We are untouchable. We ride together like a wolf-boy and a tiger on a ram.

Resting, is it, Crusoe? Oh ok, as long as they don't scoff too much pasta and get so fat they have to waddle down to the wicket like that b*st*rd S.Warne Perish the thought. Not that it seems to have done Mr Warne much harm. I’d guess they’re doing some training and stuff, as well. Bowling at a single stump should keep their eyes in, perhaps? (That bloke in the BodyLine tour did this, a northerner, retired to Australia, who was he?) Harold Larwood, Nursie. By the way, did I show you my holiday photos?
