As most people know, Tomatoes were brought back from China by Marco Polo along with the Mint Sauce (an invaluable accoutrement to Welsh Spring Lamb). It was such a success that Marco decided to move to Wales and many of his counterparts followed, hence the large number of Welsh Italians. Sadly the weather was a tad too cold for many of them so they all sailed to Argentina and invented the region of Patagonia, which is now the main exporter of tomatoes. www.tomatoartfest.com/Despite many attempts by Prof.Percy Thrower, tomatoes failed to thrive in the harsh conditions of Britain and he died a bitter and sad man. co. Don't eat too many tomatoes. This donkey was fed tomatoes instead of crab apples, this resulted in the skin and carcass of the animal taking on a tomato hue.

If people really looked inside tomatoes and saw how sinister they are, they'd give them all to donkeys.

What a great 'little' film - I have it on DVD - and Celia Johnson conveys so much, just with her eyes. A world-class movie player in my humble.

Yes, mustn't misunderstimate the great Trevor Howard.
.....'misunderestimate' is now a legit word in the Oxford English Dictionary. It's a funny old world isn't it, you muppets and numptys!

Ruined everything IIRC. might watch that movie again, if I can stand the poignancy, the long sighs, the indecision, the No, they didn't. He went off to Africa and she went back to her steady husband and two kids. It's completely incomprehensible unless you understand the way people used to live tightly regulated lives... the real conflict was between what they both wanted, and what they could allow themselves to have. Watch it again - look out for the film noir style and the touch of German impressionism here and there! It was Trevor Howard's first major film role, by the way. And it was Noël Coward wot wrote the story.

Well I'll be jiggered, Captain, I could have sworn they did. But you're right, as usual. (just found a plot-spoilers website and there it is) Did you realise Noël Coward did the station announcements? And there was a disastrous remake for TV with Sophia Loren and Richard Burton? I don't know why they bother with up-dated remakes on perfectly fine original movies. If they ever update and remake Gone With The Wind, I'll do my famous Butterfly McQueen impression (Hi, Via, start a thread on tomatoes and it turns into unconsummated passion! )

'De Yankees is comin' Miz Scarlett!!'
And what about the un-credited performers in Brief Encounter? Non-speaking Irene Handl, Valentine Dyall, non-speaking Jack May* (the boatman) and Wifred Babbage as the policeman - sometime before his schoolmaster impression in 'Jennings at School' on the wireless.
*Jack May was Nelson Gabriel in The Archers, and the waiter at Milliways in Hitchhiker's Guide. A wonderful voice!

Ok Ok All Right Captain (backs off, startled) Jack May? "everyone" knows Jack May was Nelson. There's a story, probably apocryphal, wherein he was in a lift with a companion. Two women got in. No words were exchanged during lift journey. When the two women got out, one said to the other "That is Nelson Gabriel". Point of story: he hadn't uttered a single word.
