Well this all seems very contradictory to me. So on the one hand any member can log in without being detected (I doubt that but maybe I'm just cynical); and on the other hand anyone can see the IP addresses of those not logged in. But why would they want to? They only show the country of internet service provider or something equally vague, don't they? I thought IP addresses only showed up when a guest actually posts, anyway. If it's true that anyone can see the IP addresses of those looking at the board without logging in or posting (I dislike the term lurking), then I find this strangely unsettling. I'd have thought that would put people off, which cannot be good for a board which needs, ipso facto, many contributions to keep it rocking along? Is it who is looking at which thread, or which section of the board? I find this all very puzzling but no doubt I'll either get used to it (likely), or ignore it and carry on (unlikely). Thanks for the info. I wouldn't want to come to you for an enema and my temperature taken, nurse duckett. ;D It will all become clear when you begin to use the new board. Except the IP address. This little row of numbers can pinpoint the computer you are using. They are watching you, you know....

So on the one hand any member can log in without being detected (I doubt that but maybe I'm just cynical); and on the other hand anyone can see the IP addresses of those not logged in. I think that what happens is that at the bottom of the front screen is something like “1 Staff member, 3 members, 2 invisible members, 5 guests”, or whatever. The names of the staff member and members are listed, the names of the invisible members are not listed. So it’s “invisible” in the sense that other general board users (guests and members) don’t know that it is you there but they know that someone’s there. I thought IP addresses only showed up when a guest actually posts, anyway. Well ,they do, at the moment. I think that what Desert Island Dog is suggesting is that, in future, admins will be able to see the IP address of anyone viewing the board, not just of people actually posting. anyone can see the IP addresses of those not logged in. I think that it is only admins that will be able to view IP addresses. But why would they want to?…I find this strangely unsettling. Well, quite. I can assure you, Nursie, that there’s no need to be unsettled here at Albion House the Desert Island: I’m far too busy looking at naughty pictures with important Headmasterly suff to worry about looking at IP addresses. Is it who is looking at which thread, or which section of the board? It’s not actually “who”, it’s “how many”: eg “3 people currently viewing”, or whatever. Like DID says, I guess it lets you know where the action is. Hope this makes you feel a bit better, Nursie. So, it's a lot of fancy t*rting up then, is it? Yes, I think it probably is, but I’m sure we will get through it.

IP addresses are just distressing sequences of numbers, they say little, anyone can post from another, it is not a big deal.

... it's 'invisible' in the sense that other general board users (guests and members) don't know that it is you there but they know that someone's there. Roger that.* Personally I don't know about this for 'in the future', but it is not currently possible to view "viewers' IPs". Roger that.* IP addresses are just distressing sequences of numbers, they say little, anyone can post from another, it is not a big deal. Roger that.* If I can 'borrow' Tiger Lil's words... none of this is a "big deal". Post and have fun, please! * Translated, meaning 'agreed'. Now what were YOU all thinking?

If I can 'borrow' Tiger Lil's words... none of this is a "big deal". Post and have fun, please! You can! And it really isn't a big deal unless one is ashamed to have one's lurking time known or if one is indulging in piratical activities - then it's a bit of a blow!

I'm quite ashamed of my indulgent piratical activity time, especially if it is mistaken for something similar to the Beak's looking at naughty pictures being far too busy to look at IP addresses.

Pooka I don't think you have piratical bone in your body - you need to be a mean m*ther... and you are not!

Pooka I don't think you have piratical bone in your body... Aww... likewise, Tiger Lil'. (That is, if 'piratical' would refer to 'mean' and not just 'going with the flow'.)Well you're quite right, here. You see, I'd first need to be a m*ther mother to be a mean one. ;D

karma points. who's your favourite poster? Is your ego big enough? etc. May I put in a request for this facility to be disabled? I've seen it on other boards (not QQR - they got rid of it before I saw it) and I don't like it one bit.
