Funnily enough, I was about to ask a Question about this. I do tend to start inadvertently humming or whistling things at work (mostly morris tunes ) Sing 'em a few lines of The Cuckoo's Nest. That should shut them up. Not quite sure what you mean by that, Admiral. Do you mean that it is so fine that they would cease to object to my singing? You have not heard my singing Actually it tends to be "Trunkles", "Black Joke", "Old Woman Tossed Up", or "Lass of Richmond Hill". And tunes only, not words. Mr Hutchings has made up some execrable words.

Anyone who can give an album the title "By Gloucester Docks I Sat Down and Wept" can't be the wordsmith he thinks he is. You can't blame him for 'Sweet Lass of Richmond Hill', though; I remember my father telling me that he sang that at school, and he was born in 1913!

I always thought that was a joke No, course you can't blame him for Lass of Richmond Hill, and I wasn't doing so; in his time he's written some execrable lyrics to perfectly good morris tunes which required no lyrics at all, but LORH is, as far as I know, not one of them, though Cuckoo's Nest is. Some of his other achievements must be admired; but not lyric writing, from which he should desist. My ma was also able to sing me the words of "Lass of Richmond Hill", which I believe she learned at school in the early years of the 20th C. I was referring to the tune (wordless) to which a person from, I believe, Hammersmith Morris, recently wrote an extremely fine dance (my favourite, actually!). All hail to that person, who not only spotted a tune to which it would be great fun to dance, but who also wrote a dance which will be joyfully performed long after he is dead.

I do tend to start inadvertently humming or whistling things at work...On two occasions, when I have done it in company, someone else has immediately started whistling or humming in response, but only briefly...Is this a recognised technique for dealing with annoying whistlers-at-work? Or an instinctive reaction to someone else whistling/singing? It may be that your colleagues are inspired to start humming/ singing/ whistling themselves as a result of your efforts. I don’t know if it is a recognised condition or not – I’ve never worked anywhere where people have started whistling/ singing/ humming, so no-one has followed. As a means of making you stoop, I’d have thought it was a bit risky. In the days when my sister was regularly embarrassed by my Dad’s whistling she was far more direct. She tended to give dad a black look and say “Dad, you’re whistling” in such a way that “and if you don’t desist I cannot be held responsible for my actions,” although unsaid, was most definitely implied.

Nudnick's Second Law: Dancing is an excuse for not listening to music. But it can be enjpoyable, Captain (and I bet you've played in a dance band at some time or another).

Nudnick's Second Law: Dancing is an excuse for not listening to music. But it can be enjpoyable, Captain (and I bet you've played in a dance band at some time or another). Hell yes - ghastly it was. Afternoon ballroom sessions at the Empire Leicester Square... a bigger collection of nutters you never saw - our girl singer used to get mash notes from one of them, on Friern Mental Hospital paper... Functions in the Great Room, Grosvenor House with the Syd Lipton band... dreadful. Another joyless task was Come Dancing shows...no, don't make me think about it any more! Please! I never understood what those people thought they were doing. Still don't.

Nudnick's Law: Music for dancing is never the best music. That's what we keep telling our musicians. I'm going to start telling them that, too. Hee hee. "We only dance to what you play so that we don't have to listen to it ..." Actually, Captain, our musicians genuinely enjoy playing for dancing - well, they'd have to I suppose, otherwise they wouldn't do it. It's not as if they get paid, after all. I've heard them having animated conversations about techniques used to help the dancers get off the ground, add emphasis etc. And if they do get bored, they play jokes on us which we can't help but go along with if we're in public performance.

I can remember occasionally enlivening the dreariness by our slipping in the odd bar of 5/4... Pubic performance - you do this where people can see you? How inconsiderate...!

If Not For You : Dylan If not for you, Babe, I couldn't find the door, Couldn't even see the floor, I'd be sad and blue, If not for you. If not for you, Babe, I'd lay awake all night, Wait for the mornin' light To shine in through, But it would not be new, If not for you. If not for you My sky would fall, Rain would gather too. Without your love I'd be nowhere at all, I'd be lost if not for you, And you know it's true. If not for you My sky would fall, Rain would gather too. Without your love I'd be nowhere at all, Oh! What would I do If not for you. If not for you, Winter would have no spring, Couldn't hear the robin sing, I just wouldn't have a clue, Anyway it wouldn't ring true, If not for you.

Woman In Chains : Tears for FearsYou better love loving and you better behave You better love loving and you better behave Woman in Chains Woman in Chains Calls her man the Great White Hope Says she's fine, she'll always cope Woman in Chains Woman in Chains Well I feel lying and waiting is a poor man's deal And I feel hopelessly weighed down by your eyes of steel It's a world gone crazy Keeps Woman in Chains Trades her soul as skin and bones Sells the only thing she owns Woman in Chains Woman in Chains Men of Stone Men of Stone Well I feel deep in your heart there are wounds Time can't heal And I feel somebody somewhere is trying to breathe Well you know what I mean It's a world gone crazy Keeps Woman in Chains It's under my skin but out of my hands I'll tear it apart but I won't understand I will not accept the Greatness of Man It's a world gone crazy Keeps Woman in Chains So Free Her So Free Her

Oh, how we danced on the night we were wed We vowed our true love, though a word wasn't said The world was in bloom, there were stars in the skies Except for a few that were there in your eyes Dear, as i held you close in my arms Angels were singing a hymn to your charms Two hearts gently beating, were murmuring low "My darling, I love you so", "My darling, I love you so" ...
