Somewhere over the rainbow Way up high There's a land that I heard of Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow Skies are blue And the dreams that you dare to dream Really do come true
Some day I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far behind me Where troubles melt like lemondrops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly Birds fly over the rainbow Why then, oh why can't I? Some day I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far behind me Where troubles melt like lemondrops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly Birds fly over the rainbow Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly Beyond the rainbow Why, oh why can't I?[

Great Song, Crusoe! I don't like cricket oh no I love itI used to sing that out loud in my previous job. People found this exasperating when they were trying to work. I have no idea why. Philistines, the lot of them*. *most of them were American, however, dottirs.

Well, if you're travelin' in the north country fair, Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline, Remember me to one who lives there. She once was a true love of mine.
Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm, When the rivers freeze and summer ends, Please see if she's wearing a coat so warm, To keep her from the howlin' winds.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long, If it rolls and flows all down her breast. Please see for me if her hair hangs long, That's the way I remember her best.
I'm a-wonderin' if she remembers me at all. Many times I've often prayed In the darkness of my night, In the brightness of my day.
So if you're travelin' in the north country fair, Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline, Remember me to one who lives there. She once was a true love of mine.

Let's not forget who's song 'Over the Rainbow' was - Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg.
And where was the verse, may I ask?

Thank you, Nurse D: it seemed to fit my mood at the time (having just been following a dead exciting cricket match). I guess that having singing in the office isn’t to everyone’s liking: there’s no pleasing some people, you know.

And where was the verse, may I ask? I thought you might have it, Captain. Harold Arlen? Did he write “Out of this World”, as well?

ASCAP list over 300 published songs with music by Harold Arlen. When all the clouds are a hopeless jumble And the raindrops tumble to the ground Heaven opens a magic lane. When all the clouds darken up the skyway There's a rainbow highway to be found Leading from your window pane To a place beyond the sun Just a step behind the rain.... Somewhere, Over The Rainbow...

I'd keep schtum, Capt, especially when answering to the Admiral of the Fleet. Anyone who applauds Eva Cassidy's butchering of the melody has no reason to proclaim on anything musical at all. And you can put that in the Captains Blog!

As it happens, I transcribed the verse from Jane Monheit's recording, and checked it against Sylvie MacNair's version with André Previn...

I guess that having singing in the office isn’t to everyone’s liking: there’s no pleasing some people, you know. Funnily enough, I was about to ask a Question about this. I do tend to start inadvertently humming or whistling things at work (mostly morris tunes : - though I do try not to do it when anyone else is around. On two occasions, when I have done it in company, someone else has immediately started whistling or humming in response, but only briefly. This has the effect of making me realise what I'm doing, and stop. It stops the next urge to start whistling/humming in its tracks too. Is this a recognised technique for dealing with annoying whistlers-at-work? Or an instinctive reaction to someone else whistling/singing?
