What a survivor! Dull music though.

Hee hee, well that’s pretty succinct, Lil.
Ronal Searle is, undoubtedly, a fascinating person whose cartoons (especially the Molesworth illustrations) are wonderful. His wartime experiences were quite shocking: as you say, a survivor. But his musical choices didn’t do a lot for me, either.

Assuming that you're referring to Desert Island Discs, that is the main weakness in the format: because someone is eminent in their field, be it artist, industrialist, bishop or whatever, there is no reason to believe they know their brass from their oboe when it comes to music. Which isn't to say that all musicians would pick something acceptable, either!
I haven't heard the programme for years...

Oh I don't know, I've always loved 'A Spotless Rose' I suppose 'Fantasia on a Theme' is the classical equivalent of Free's 'Alright Now'. Best listened to once every five years or the piece is destoyed. How I loathe 'What a Wonderful World'.

How I loathe 'What a Wonderful World'. I loathe 'what a wonderful world' with ferocity. It is the most mawkish load of sentimental tosh ever inflicted on anyone with ears which work. IMHO. shuddering barfing smiley gif

Poor old Louis -- it wasn't his idea... Thrown at him at the end of a recording session, so, being a pro, he did it. Result -- enormous hit!
All fits in with my theory (still in development) which seeks to show that the better the artiste, the more likely it is that their biggest hit will be the worst record they ever made. Examples: Ella Fitzgerald's 'Can't Buy Me Love' - Frank Sinatra's 'My Way' (shudder) ...

That was Bill Shattner's best! Isn’t that a bit like saying “That was British Rail’s tastiest sandwich!”? Another thing, Captain, I’m sure I once read that one of the writers of “What a Wonderful World” (Weiss?) was a pseudonym for Bob Thiele. Do you know if that’s true? If it is, he really should have known better.
