Well, it was all going so well until “Imagine”, the bane of right-thinking DID listeners. Why oh why oh why, etc.
Perhaps Satish Kumar can be excused this aberration, however, since, for the second week in a row, I found this programme really interesting and much of the music enjoyable, although his first two choices of Joan Baez and Bob Dylan were, perhaps, a bit stereotypical of “old hippies’” choices.
I was fascinated to hear of the impetus that the death of his father had given his work and also by the fact that he was so dedicated of his chosen path. To have become a monk at the age of 9 and to have undertaken his immense walk shows a great commitment. I also loved the glee with which he said “yes, yes, yes!” when asked to confirm that he made managers clean toilets. I can imagine many a harassed wage-slave enjoying that.
I also enjoyed the description of his relationship with his mother, whom he obviously loved and revered.
Although, when Sue Lawley pressed him on the benefits of money, he admitted that it is an important resource, some of his ideas did appear to be slightly unrealistic and backward-looking, although you can’t fault his devotion to them. All in all, however, I found him a fascinating man and thought this was another excellent edition of DID next week can make it three in a row?

Nothing at all. It’s just that the choices were a little unimaginative. If Mr Kumar is an old hippy, that is

I completely missed this one, having better things to do Though my friend and I had something of a lie-in on Sunday morning and funnily enough he turns out to be a Radio-4-on-all-the-time person too, so he probably heard it.* Who's next? I'm too lazy to go downstairs and look at the Radio Times, though if no-one answers in the next five minutes I'll look when I go to make yet more tea. *Talking of which, I wonder whether young GenLexia actually got to hear any Radio 4 while she was here? Or did we all turn it off in favour of conversing with her?

It was probably the latter. Although, spending time by herself the last couple of days, Gen'Lexia switched on the television in the hopes of learning a bit of the current goings-on in the UK news. All I remember being repeated - over and over - was the same newstory: Blair's Bad Back... Blair's Bad Back... Blair's Bad Back...

Next week it is someone called Nigel Slater, an "author and cook".
I don't know of him. But then I'd never heard of Cornelia Parker before she was on DID, and she was wonderful.

He’s dead famous is Nigel Slater (as well as being the most readable cookery writer in my experience). Come to think of it, he may well have grown up in Wolverhampton: I shall have to check my copy of “Toast”. Ah, yes, talking of toast, does the fact that you’ve found the listing mean that it’s too late to ask you if you could make us a tea while you’re at it? Thought so.

Get yea to a library or book shoppe young Lux! A wonderful read. It moved me to tears. He also knows a lot about Thirst - handy book for a Desert Isle!
