I have to buy a new mobile/cell/handy phone. I'm not interested in fancy bluetooth sockets which you stick in your ear, or games, or calendars or any accessories. All I want to do is make and take phone calls and text messages, but I have a very limited budget. I don't even care what it looks like, within reason. Where should I start?

A lot of people swear by Nokia.

I've had some luck with Siemens, and I'm now using a Samsung. Do you currently have a cellular company? Perhaps they can offer you some good deals if you visit their store. If you lived in the Torrance area, I'd recommend that you visit my location... they've been nothing but wonderful.

I have Nokia and Motorola - I bought the Motorola cheap, sim-free, while the Nokia belongs to someone I do some voluntary work for. They are both fine.

i use a very basic nokia and a fairly sophisticated siemens (gprs) with camera etc. the basic nokia seems tougher and the siemens is much prettier... both do exactly the same in terms of calls and messages...
i have two phones because i use two providers to gain certain advantages ... check your providers...

I've been on to Vodaphone's website. They're offering a Free Samsung Z500 with 200 anytime minutes for £12.50 a month for 6 months. Also a Free Samsung D500, same deal. Or a Free Motorola V3 black same deal except £15/month. Er, what are anytime minutes? Is that per month or per 6 months or per day or per week or what? What happens if you use up 200 minutes in the first two weeks, what happens then? Why isn't this obvious? Why isn't there a FAQ? Why should anyone have to plough through pages of "contact us" to fail to get an answer to simple questions? It could be worse. Mobile phones in the old days were the size shape and weight of a breeze-block and had to be carried around on a shoulder-strap.

I wonder if pay as you go would be better if on a limited budget?
I have twice had a contract and definitly think pay as you go is the best option for my type of mobile phone use.
But then I am an emergencies only kind of user and only my immediate family have my number.

Just my luck, I missed her by a few minutes. The faint whiff of expensive perfume, a few dying embers......one day, dear dulcie.
