"Oh Calcutta!" - terrible play on words - "Oh, quel cul tu as!" That and Hair were reactions to the abolition of the Lord Chamberlain's grip on theatre censorship. There was an even worse show, called 'Carte Blanche' - I did a few nights depping in the pit: lots of top writers unloaded their dirtiest sketches - it was pretty dire. I saw more of one girl on the stage than I had seen when she stayed at my flat...
No - musicals are things like My Fair Lady and Oklahoma! -- plays where the action is advanced through interpolated songs. Daz mentioned Show Boat, which is one of the greatest - although it never settled down to the point of there being a definitive version. Great music - Jerome Kern (the great melodist). Words by Oscar Hammerstein II --based on a novel by Edna Ferber that exposed the cruelty of racial prejudice...

Hey this thread is turning out more interesting than I thought it would, with all due respect to Pooks: Oklahoma!Lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II Music by RICHARD RODGERS Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain And the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet When the wind comes right behind the rain. Oklahoma, Ev'ry night my honey lamb and I Sit alone and talk and watch a hawk Makin' lazy circles in the sky. We know we belong to the land And the land we belong to is grand! And when we say Yeeow! Ayipioeeay! We're only sayin' You're doin' fine, Oklahoma! Oklahoma O.K. (mind you, you have to know the tune)

Kris Kristofferson is an unlikely choice but does dredge up some disturbing musical memories. Not only is the man incapable of acting but his attempts at singing defy belief. upsetter, it just goes to show how thick i am ... the thread said musical memories... and i did not read the intro... i reckon not many people know that kristofferson wrote a few really great songs... words and music at a time when he appeared to be a very attractive sexpot.. (before he rotted in alcohol) i would not have contributed to this thread [as i loathe musicals as much as i adore the regular theatre and quite a bit of opera] except for the fact that i had to correct my posting and was certain that noone would quote hair... an exercise in the mood of the time and nudnick gave the perfect explanation for its success... perhaps the only 'musical' type offering i ever enjoyed was 'ain't misbehaving' - basically a string of fats waller songs... and bob hoskins - doing a great improvisation when technical stuff went wrong on stage - in guys and dolls at the national. why has not anyone mentioned miserables and man of la mancha yet? musicals: you cannot beat bollywood....

Ah, Bollywood... where everything is a musical - anyone see Devdas? Isn't Aishwarya Rai the loveliest thing you ever saw in a sari? Oh hell, there go my knees again.... Les Mis: a one-song show ('Master of the House') Man of La Mancha: 'To reach, The unreachable note....' same problem. In the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s, in a successful musical all or most of the numbers were hits. That doesn't happen any more.

No - I like Bollywood movies - or at least some of them. Lots of music, lots of colour, lovely women... what more could an old fool ask? And obviously Sea Horse agrees!

Dare I include: Not one of my favourites, but I kinda like the poodle skirt era. And no, I won't tell you more, tell you more...
