Someone on the R4 drama board was raving about this, but it reminded me of the R4 production of Dodie Smith’s Dear Octopus. It sounded more like an upper-middle-class boys’ prep. school, rather than a language school – and we did hear the mandatory R4 reference to Cambridge. Those constant references to ‘half’ – instead of half-term – drove the listener insane! I’m sure R4 does this kind of thing to annoy listeners. Did anyone hear Clare Balding the other day on Ramblings calling university clubs and societies ‘squashes’? Who on earth – except the very posh – call them that?
What a depressing play…..the lonely spinster who’d longed to be married, but had devoted all her life to looking after her mother (and the mother rewarded her by wetting herself all the time)……the even more desperately lonely male teacher who wanted everyone to be his friend…..but no one else did. Then he was sacked…..and he didn’t even complain! The silly old fool (marriage sounded pathetic) who went off on holiday in a caravan with his kids and miserable wife.
I think a special edition of In The Psychiatrist’s Chair was called for after all this depressing stuff.

I avoided this one because it was excessively trailed, which is so often a bad sign. I’m glad I didn’t miss too much. I think a special edition of In The Psychiatrist’s Chair was called for I think any edition of “In the Psychiatrist’s Chair” would be welcome
