R4 made a dreadful mistake not broadcasting this fine programme on Christmas day (but I wish we could have heard a little more of Sweet Gene Vincent), especially when saturation Mozart has alienated many millions of R4 listeners.
It’s understandable that programme controllers don’t want to spend excessive money when base load listeners tend to be absent over this period. However, there is usually a period over Christmas when one has a desperate need to be alone with one’s radio, listening to an interesting programme. R4 has always delivered in previous years: fascinating programme about the life of Louis Braille (Christmas 2001 or 2002?), Rupert and Pooh Bear (great narration by Paul Vaughan), last year’s programme about ‘Christmas Street’. Yet nothing this year - is someone trying to kill off R4?
