After a considerable hiatus, I have been prompted to post (to any of you that happen to be passing by) by the sheer joy of listening to Oliver Postgate.
His choices were all understandable and had some romance to them. Although “When the Saints Come Marching In” is a bit “trad, Dad”, I thought Pete Fountain’s version really did have a vitality about it that meant that, of the selections, I, too, would probably have run to save that one.
I find Ms Young’s interviewing style warmer than Ms Lawley’s and I think it worked particularly well, here. Given the level of affection with which Mr Postgate is viewed by so many, it felt right for some of that feeling to be expressed.
His life story is fascinating and the range of things he has done truly mind-boggling. The story of reporting for non-duty as a conscientious objector was very funny, indeed. The range of his ingenuity was fascinating and inspiring, as well, and it was, most of all, wonderful to hear of his view that children need not be talked down to, merely treated as human beings.
All in all, I was enchanted, just as I used to be by his television programmes.
