Mrs. Danvers is a puzzle is she not? What happened to Mr. Danvers? Did she bump him off? And do you think she might be a L*sb*an with the unnatural devotion to our Rebecca? She is on record as having admired R's see-through nightdress and her fine, manly, way with horses and lovers. Rebecca was also into incest. This is not judgemental, but a mere observation. Mrs. Danvers probably approved of that too. And why don't we know Mrs. Danvers' first name? It must have been something stern and old-fashioned (by our modern ears). Something like Horatia, or Hermione perhaps?

I nominate you to write a sequel, giving us the full details, Nurse D. You seem to be onto something already.
Scary woman, Mrs Danvers. As are most women called Hermione and Hildebrand and such. There must be a connection. That’s the great thing about a desert island: plenty of opportunity for contemplation.

There's nowt much wrong with incest.
At least you know where they're coming from who they are.
cough.
Anyway, it was only a cousin wasn't it? Favell, the bloke with a sports car and a George Sanders accent.

This was never made clear in the novel. To any Icelandic woman or women called Hilda Danversdottir who may happen to read this, Hello.

Whitbey Island is especially scenic but avoid the clam chowder in any month with an R in it. Salmonella poisoning is not a pretty sight

I thank for you kind “hello” talk, Mrs Nurse. Seattle in the Enaglands now time is much warm, I wonder? Hello again Hilda DanversDottir. I prefer the salutation Nurse Duckett or Sue Ann. I'm not too sure about the Sue Ann and would have preferred a more esoteric name or names. Hilda sounds rather stern but you sound nothing of the sort. My marital status will remain a secret between me and the haematologist in the Blood Bank here on the island. We should have a Blood Bank. Then I can cross-match in case of accidents on the coral outcroppings while you all go fishing, for instance. Someone has to Plan Ahea D

Crumbs! I have lived in the Du Maurier country (Fowey, Boddinick etc., in Cornwall) but can't say her books ever reached out and said 'read me!' Manderley does ring a bell now, though.
